US retailer Walmart has apologised over a tweet about late Fast and Furious star Paul Walker, who died in a car crash.

An account with the handle @Iamlaurenmiles posted a story on Tuesday about Walmart selling Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls with strawberry and cream flavoured icing.

Excited about the announcement, she added a GIF of a car speeding through traffic to symbolise her desire to rush to buy the product. She added the caption: “me racing”.

In a reply on Twitter, Walmart said: “Hey, Paul Walker. Click it, or ticket.”

The company later deleted the tweet but not before it was widely shared and prompted backlash.

“Dude not cool,” wrote one Twitter user.

“Paul Walker was known for giving back and helping others. I met a wardrobe dresser when I worked on a commercial in the Captain America outfit. She literally cried talking about him."

Another user quipped that an intern was running the Walmart account and posted a gif of the Heath Ledger as the Joker causing destruction.

However, some user stuck up for the supermarket and said the comment was meant to be humorous.

User @Riffy61 said: "It’s a joke from Workaholics... read a book and lighten up, you nerds."

In a statement, Walmart told FOX Business: “We apologise to Paul Walker’s family, friends and fans.

“The tweet was posted in poor judgement and has been removed.”

The actor died in 2013, aged 40. At the time of his death, Walker had been filming Fast and Furious 7.
