Wallsend special school wants to add extra building to accommodate more pupils

A North Tyneside special school will expand to make space for more pupils if plans to add an extra building are given the go-ahead by the council .

Beacon Hill School wants to install a steel framed "modular unit" to meet increasing demand for its services.

A design and access statement said: "The proposal is a result of the clients need to expand accommodation to meet the current growth of therapy services the school offers both internally and as an external service.

"Due to the nature of the service and the current school building not being able to accommodate the additional space required to run the services, an external modular building has been proposed."

Beacon Hill is a school for young people with severe learning difficulties and profound and multiple learning difficulties aged two to 19 years of age.

It said that 20 new pupils will be joining the school in the next academic year and the new building will provide space for these students.

"The number of students at Beacon Hill School will increase by 20 additional students in September 2019 the works proposed above provide accommodation to allow for admission of the additional students," it said.

The components for the new building will arrive at the Wallsend school ready for assembly during the summer break to "limit disruption" to pupils.

Other site preparations, such as infrastructure connections and access structures will be fitted at the same time.
