Wallsend fire: Residents evacuated as fire crews continue to tackle huge blaze

A huge fire has broken out in North Tyneside leading to a number of people being evacuated from their homes.

A police cordon remains in place as firefighters continue to battle the blaze.

At about 1.55am on Sunday, police received a report from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service about the fire in Wallsend

They reported that a large number of tyres had been set on fire at a tyre yard near to the High Street.

A number of gas cylinders are believed to be at the tyre yard that have also caught fire and exploded.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said no-one has been reported injured.

The spokesperson added: "However, a number of residential properties in the area have been evacuated as a precaution."

The Anson Pub is being used as a temporary rest centre at this moment in time and officers remain at the scene to liaise with concerned members of the public.

A police cordon will remain in place for some time as police continue to support Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service with their operation.

Police are asking residents who live in the immediate area but have not been evacuated to keep their windows closed as a precaution.
