FIRE fighters have saved neighbouring units from a blaze that broke out in a garage overnight.
Shortly after 9.30pm Monday NSW Fire and Rescue crews responded to reports of a fire in a pair of units in Wallsend.
Wallsend Fire Station along with five units from Lambton Fire Station and Mayfield West were sent to the address in Stapleton Street. On arrival at the scene it was confirmed that the fire was in the garage below two adjoining units.
A power saw was used to cut through the garage door to gain better access.

Crews quickly contained the blaze to the garage and conducted a search through the premises to ensure all occupants were safe and accounted for.
The unit was then ventilated of toxic smoke. It only sustained heat and smoke damage from the fire below.
"With the weather still on the chilly side it's a timely reminder to check you have working smoke alarms and continue to keep everything at least a metre from the heater," a statement from NSW Fire and Rescue said.
