Wallsend Festival will go ahead next month after being cancelled due to Covid last year

A popular festival is returning next month after being cancelled last year due to the coronavirus crisis.

Wallsend Festival was among the events that had to be put off in 2020 because of the pandemic.

But North Tyneside Council has confirmed it will take place this year in Wallsend town centre on Saturday, August 14, between 10am and 5pm.

Now in its 20th year, the community event will include fairground rides, live music and a selection of stalls selling crafts, gifts and food produce.

Coun Sarah Day, the council's cabinet member for culture, sport and leisure, said: "We are pleased to bring the festival back to Wallsend as restrictions are eased as it’s such a popular part of the borough’s events calendar and we know it’s one the community really enjoy.

"We'll be doing as much as we can this summer to provide things to do for visitors and residents as we cautiously and steadily get back to doing the things we love."

Bands and solo artists from North Tyneside ’s Standing Upright Project will be performing on a stage outside the Forum Shopping Centre. The project works with young people who have experienced anxieties or difficulties when it comes to performance.

A collection of classic cars will also be on display between Park Road and High Street East. People will be able to take a look inside the vintage vehicles and chat to the owners.

Small fairground rides will be located at High Street East and larger attractions can be found at the Segedunum Roman Fort car park.

The museum will be open throughout the weekend for those wanting to explore the town’s Roman history.

The annual event would usually take place on the first Saturday of July each year but Covid restrictions meant that has not been possible since the last festival in 2019.
