It has resulted in the south tube of the Kingsway Tunnel closing.

Pictures and video from the scene from the ECHO's Andrew Teebay shows motorists having to cut across to the remaining unaffected tube and use a temporary lane set up for traffic heading from Liverpool to Wirral.

Traffic from Wirral is able to use the other lane in this tube.

Merseytravel tweeted around midday: "The South Tube of the Kingsway # Wallasey tunnel is currently closed due to a large pothole appearing in the road.

"We anticipate that this closure will last for a few hours."

A Merseytravel spokesperson said: “Due to damage to the roadway, the south tube of the Kingsway (Wallasey) Tunnel was closed to traffic for a period of around three hours. The north tube of the tunnel remained open to traffic, as did the Queensway (Birkenhead) Tunnel, and the disruption caused was minimal. Emergency repairs have been undertaken and the incident has now been resolved and south tube of the tunnel has now reopened to traffic. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
