Wallasey tunnel chaos with traffic backed up for miles due to broken down lorry

A broken down lorry in the Wallasey tunnel has sparked traffic chaos this morning.

Travel monitors INRIX said as of 8.30am there was four miles of tailbacks from the Wirral entrance stretching back to the the M53.

The major disruption has been triggered by a lorry which ground to a halt in the tunnel as it headed towards Liverpool this morning, reportedly due to a flat tyre.

"Congestion to the M53. Also seeing delays in the Queensway Birkenhead Tunnel as traffic seeks alternative routes. Travel time is around 40 minutes.

"Lane one (of two) is closed due to the lorry having a flat tyre."

All lanes have now reopened.
