Wallace Monument to reopen following £500,000 refurbishment ahead of 150th anniversary

The National Wallace Monument is set to reopen on Friday.

The iconic 220ft tower will again be open to the public following a £500,000 refurbishment and conservation scheme.

As part of the works, which began in February, the bronze 14ft statue of Sir William Wallace was removed from the monument to undergo specialist restoration off site.

Refurbishments also include transforming the three main exhibition galleries, which include the Hall of Arms which houses Wallace’s famous medieval sword.

The restoration works are part of the monument’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

Designed by Glasgow architect John Thomas Rochead, the renowned monument was constructed between 1861 and 1869 and attracts more than 140,000 visitors a year.

A programme of events is taking place at the monument to mark the occasion, with 150 days worth of special events throughout the year.

The anniversary date will be marked on September 11 with an evening spectacle entitled ‘Wallace 150’. It will be followed by ‘Wallace Wha Hae!’, a community festival in the grounds of Wallace High School on September 14.

The monument will reopen its doors to the public at 9.30am on Friday, April 19.

Exterior scaffolding is expected to remain in place while exterior renovation work continues.
