Wall of church completely destroyed after car crashes and flips over

A wall has been completely destroyed outside a church after a driver flew into a wall and flipped their car.

Merseyside Police was called after a car smashed into a wall and a pedestrian crossing on Birkenhead Road in Meols, Wirral, at 1.45am on Sunday, July 2. Footage shared online following the crash shows the car smash into the wall before carrying on at speed through a pelican crossing and ending up on its side in the opening to a property nearby.

The cars hazard lights start flashing and a second car stops a short distance away. There is also a lot of debris covering the road and pavement.

Police confirmed a man Matthew Bratley, 21, of North Parade, Hoylake, has been charged on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle when above the alcohol level limit. He has been bailed to appear in court on August 1.

The ECHO went to the scene one day after the horror crash and spoke to The Rev Mark Bates from St Andrews Church, whose wall was damaged in the incident. Pictures from the scene show piles of bricks lying in the gardens of the church and a police cordon surrounding a damaged pelican crossing post.

The Rev Bates said: "This is what we encountered on Sunday morning at 1.40am when a car hit the wall, destroyed it and then continued down the footpath taking out the pelican crossing and one of our neighbour's walls as well. The car then ended up on its side.

"The extent of the damage is quite extensive and so we will wait and see what happens whether insurance or anything else is in place."
