Walking route up extinct volcano with 'beautiful views' named Scotland's best

AN affordable walking route up an extinct volcano with "beautiful views" has been named the best in Scotland.

The North Berwick and The Law route in East Lothian, which takes in "sweeping views" of the sea, combines hill walking with a leisurely stroll through an idylic seaside town.

This comes as research showed that young people are increasingly spending more of their time and money on wellness and nature instead of nights out.

Discussing this, Sarah Helppi, UK Country Director at Trainline, said there has been a "real shift" in how young people want to spend their time and money.

To make it easier for young people to seize these opportunities, the train ticket app has highlighted some of the walks in Scotland that don't break the bank, including Mugdock Park, Falls of Clyde and Nairn Beach.

Highlighting the five-mile walking route, which takes around 2.5 hours to complete, the researchers called it "a short, steep climb up an ancient volcanic plug with sweeping coastal views, plus the quirky sight of a replica whale jawbone at the summit."

They added that the walk combines a beach and town stroll with some moderately challenging hill walking.

Discussing the affordability of the route, they said that an Off-Peak return ticket from Edinburgh Waverly to North Berwick (35 mins) sets travellers back £9.10.

Sharing how to complete the route, Visit East Lothian said that ramblers should start by heading south on Victoria Road and Quality Street before continuing through the Lodge Gardens and Grounds.

Walkers will go through a small, wooded area and then across Gilbert Avenue and Lochbridge Road.

Finally, they should follow the path onto Law view and turn right, with the North Berwick Law to their left.

At the end of this, walkers can turn left and follow the path to the car park where the ascent can begin.
