'Walking on Sunshine' tribute to coronavirus crisis volunteers captures Northumberland's spirit

Northumberland is famed for its beautiful landscapes but it's the people who give the county its spirit.

Those living in England's top corner have shown their thanks to the army of volunteers who kept Northumberland going through the coronavirus crisis by joining a challenge to film themselves dancing along to 'Walking in Sunshine' by Katrina and the Waves.

Northumberland Communities Together asked Northumbrians to take on the feel-good task in tribute to the kindness shown by tireless volunteers who were a lifeline for many in the often remote county.

The heartwarming response Northumbrians was so impressive that Katrina and the Waves singer Katrina Leskanic has labelled the video as an "extraordinary version of Walking on Sunshine”.

The final cut includes creative kids, daft outfits galore and, of course, dancing coppers.

Councillor Cath Homer, Northumberland County Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for the voluntary and community sector, said: “Northumberland residents have made us proud showing their support for volunteers and community groups. It's been heartwarming seeing everyone come together, have fun and show their Northumbrian Spirit."

"The volunteer community has been working so hard through this pandemic, and this video is a fun way to come together and show thanks to communities across the county.”

Northumbrians of all ages answered the call to take part in the video after the idea was launched by Doctor and the Medic's frontman Clive Jackson.

Clive said: “You are all stars, and have proven time and time again that the people of Northumberland always achieve amazing things when they work together."

Northumberland Communities Together's volunteers have helped 18,200 shielding people in the county and delivered more than 3,000 food parcels during the coronavirus crisis.
