Walkers travelled more than 180 miles to visit beauty spot despite police warnings to stay away

Walkers are continuing to travel to a popular beauty spot, despite warnings from police to stay away unless they live locally.

Police discovered people who had travelled more than 180 miles to visit Fairy Glen, near Appley Bridge in Wigan, this weekend.

Last week, Lancashire Constabulary warned those who do not live near the popular walking destination to stay away under the guidance of 'stay local'.

In a message to the public, Chief Inspector Chris Abbott issued the warning after one of his officers was assaulted by a non-local who they had challenged.

But over the weekend, officers were once again forced to tell people to leave immediately, Lancs Live reports.

People visited the beauty spot from Stockport, Warrington, Wallasey, Liverpool, and Widnes in Merseyside.

However, the most gob-smacking breach of Covid guidelines was individuals travelling from Gwent in South Wales to Fairy Glen; a journey of more than 180 miles in one direction.

It is unclear if these individuals were fined for their rule-breaking, with police simply saying they were 'told to leave the area'.

Under current restrictions, people in England are instructed to 'stay local' for any outdoor exercise.

An increased police presence is expected to continue at Fairy Glen, with people told to not be shocked or offended if officers stop to ask them where they are from.

West Lancashire Borough Council has issued 'Covid Guidance' signs at Fairy Glen, which say 'do not visit if you do not live locally', as well as general Covid-safety rules.

A spokesperson from the West Lancashire Policing Team said: "Officers have once again been at Fairy Glen, Appley Bridge and Parbold Hill, on the whole people attending have been local and have been abiding by the current guidelines.

"We have had people come from Wallasey, Stockport, Liverpool, Widnes, Warrington and even Gwent in South Wales.

"These people have been told to leave the area.

"People can expect to see us at popular locations across the county over the days and weeks. Please don’t be offended if we stop you and talk to you.

"Our officers are just doing their job and their best to keep everyone safe - if you have travelled a significant distance to exercise you can expect to be asked to leave and choose somewhere more appropriate closer to home.

"Thanks to everyone today who have passed their thanks to the Officers and have waved when passing, it is appreciated."
