Walkers ignoring coronavirus signs trigger angry response from Wirral Council

Wirral Council has slammed members of the public for ignoring signs at West Kirby Marine Lake, reminding them that the "coronavirus has not gone away".

On Sunday afternoon, the Council shared photos appearing to show groups of people waking around the Marine Lake despite signs reminding the public that the walkway was closed due to the coronavirus.

In the post, the Council said that day-trippers were seen "clambering over rocks" and "climbing railings" to bypass signs blocking entrance to the popular attraction.

In the photos, large signs can be seen blocking entrance to the walkway and also reminding members of the public to socially distance.

In one of the pictures, multiple groups can be seen out on the walkway despite it being closed to the public.

One couple were reportedly spotted "passing a pram with baby in it" over the lake in order to access the path.

Sharing the photos on their Facebook account, the Council said that the signs remained in place for a reason and called on the public to "please be sensible".

Wirral Council said: "Our friends at Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team have reported many people ignoring the 'closed walkway' signs at West Kirby Marine Lake and are taking risks to access the path including clambering over rocks, climbing railings and even passing a pram with a baby in it over the Marine Lake just to access the path.

"Please do not use the walkway. The signs are there for a reason. The walkway is closed for everybody's safety. The coronavirus has not gone away. Please be sensible."

Last weekend Prime Minister Boris Johnson eased the coronavirus lockdown restrictions allowing people to take unlimited exercise and to travel for leisure in England as long as they remained socially distanced.

This announcement was in strict contrast to the approach taken by the devolved nations- Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland- where residents have been told to stay at home.
