Walkers discover 'decomposing' body in remote field as police cordon off area

Detectives are investigating the discovery of a "decomposed" body in a remote field.

Officers have closed off a rural field in South London after a body was found by walkers on Sunday afternoon (September 26).

Police were called shortly before 4.30pm on Sunday after members of the public made the grim discovery, MyLondon reports.

Enquiries into the death, which is being treated as unexplained, are ongoing with officers working to identify the person.

It is understood the body was found by walkers on Sunday afternoon in the corner of a field on the side of a hill close to Biggin Hill airport.

Unconfirmed reports on social media said the group who found the badly decomposed remains were believed the body was a male and that it had been in the field for 'months'.

A crime scene remains in place on the secluded field close to the airport at Biggin Hill in Bromley, South East London.

It is surrounded by country lanes with no residential properties for around a mile radius.

A white tent was set up at the spot in the field where the body is suspected to have been found while a single police car was stationed at the opposite corner.

Police tape blocks entrances into the hedged area, including one from Jewels Wood near to where the body was found.

A Met Police spokesman said: "Police were called at 4.19pm on Sunday, 26 September to Saltbox Hill and Jewels Hill after a body was found by members of the public who were walking in a field.

“Officers are working to identify the deceased and inform next of kin.

“The death is currently being treated as unexplained.

“A post-mortem examination will be held in due course.

“No arrests at this time; enquiries are ongoing.

“A crime scene remains in place."

Local residents reported seeing a large police presence in the area.

Police cars were apparently parked up in the area all through the night.
