Walkers Crisps factory evacuated due to fire amid UK-wide shortage

The Walkers Crisps factory in Leicester has been evacuated due to a fire.

Nine different fire crews are at the scene after the alarm was raised shortly before 11am today.

A fire service spokesperson told Leicestershire Live no casualties have been reported, but its welfare vehicle is in attendance.

Smoke can be seen billowing from the roof of the building.

A Walkers spokesperson said: “Our Bursom Road site in Leicester was safely evacuated this morning due to a fire on the roof of the building.

"The fire has now been brought under control and the fire brigade remains on site as a precautionary measure. Everybody on site has been accounted for.”

It comes as Walkers said it was "working round the clock to get back to capacity" amid a nationwide shortage of some Walkers products.

The snack giant was struggling to make enough snacks to satisfy customer demand because of technical problems following a major IT upgrade.

A spokeswoman confirmed that multipacks of cheese and onion crisps, baked ready salted, Quavers, Wotsits and French Fries had all been affected.

In September PepsiCo said it had completed a £14 million upgrade of the Southern Region Distribution Centre in Beaumont Leys – its largest UK distribution site - including “state-of-the-art equipment and technology” to increase storage capacity at the warehouse site by 29 per cent.
