Walkergate drink driver caught after forgetting to put headlights on

A drink driver who was travelling walking distance to his brother's house was caught after he forgot to use his headlights.

Ray Little decided to get behind the wheel while over the limit in order to drop a video game at his sibling's home but was pulled over by police.

The dad-of-four made the journey in the early hours of the morning but came to the attention of officers as his Vauxhall Insignia had no lights on.

The 29-year-old was arrested after he failed a roadside breath test and later gave a reading of 94 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath, when the legal limit is just 35.

Little, of Pembroke Avenue, in Walkergate, Newcastle, appeared before North Tyneside Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, where he pleaded guilty to one count of driving with excess alcohol.

Jonathan Hanratty, prosecuting, said Little got in his car at around 1am on November 22 this year.

He added: "The officer's attention was drawn to the defendant because he was driving without lights at 1am. He was weaving in the road and comes to a natural stop and complies with all procedures."

The court heard that Little had no past convictions and had held a clean driving licence for seven years.

What are the drink driving limits

Kate Matthews, mitigating, said: "He can't decide why he decided to drive - it was only two minutes to his brother's address.

"The football was on at lunchtime that day. He had early drinks but stopped drinking and thought he would drop a game off at his brother's house.

"He doesn't know why did it and didn't walk."

Fining Little £200 and banning him from the roads for 20 months, District Judge Paul Currer said: "It's very sad when someone of previous good character appears before the court and loses their good character.

"Only you will know why you decided to drive such a short distance and only you will have to bear the consequences of it."

Little was also ordered to pay £85 costs and a £34 victim surcharge.
