Walker stumbles upon adder snake in middle of popular footpath

An adder has been spotted near Clyne in Swansea. Denise Lo was out walking on Tuesday afternoon when she discovered the venomous snake.

The 36-year-old, from West Cross, said the snake was on the footpath when she came across it.

She explained that she normally looked at her phone while walking, and if she had been doing so on this occasion she would have "definitely" stepped on it.

Adders can be found in woodland, heathland or moorland habitats and only usually bite when they are provoked, stepped on or picked up.

Miss Lo said: "I was quite surprised to come across it yesterday.

"I often walk with my eyes on my phone but I was so glad I didn't on this occasion as the adder was on the actual footpath and I would have definitely stepped on it.

"I was about 1.5 metres away when I spotted him.

"I would say it was a teenager as once it actually decided to move along into the grass he was about 30cm long.

"I'm new to this location and was definitely not aware of the snake presence in the area but I feel quite privileged to see one."

The sighting comes after an adder was spotted on Oxwich Bay, in Gower, last month.

At the time Haven Vets warned that dogs were "particularly at risk" of adder bites.

The spokesman said: "Adder bites mainly occur around a dog’s legs or face and typically result in a dark, painful swelling. You may also be able to see two small puncture wounds in the centre of the swelling.

"If left untreated, dogs may collapse, have blood clotting problems, tremors or convulsions."

He added: "Unfortunately, dogs are particularly at risk of adder bites due to their curious nature.

"Urgent treatment may be needed if your dog has been bitten by an adder, so contact your vet as soon as possible for advice."
