Walker flown to hospital after suffering suspected broken ankle in Saddleworth

A walker was rushed to hospital after being rescued following a fall in Oldham. The man was helped by mountain rescue teams after falling at Birchen Clough, Saddleworth.

He is thought to have suffered a broken ankle during the incident on Saturday evening. Oldham Mountain Rescue Team was called in by the North West Ambulance Service to help bring the man to safety.

The team also requested further help from the Marine and Coastguard helicopter, which has a winch, as well as further support from Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team. The casualty was then flown to hospital in Sheffield to undergo treatment.

The Oldham team then had to carry the equipment back down to their road vehicles, and sent a team member to Sheffield to collect their colleague who had been supporting the casualty. Rob Tortoiseshell, leader of Oldham Mountain Rescue Team, thanked his colleagues for their support in helping rescue the patient and transfer him to hospital.

In total they were deployed for five hours.
