Wales Women to host Scotland in final audition for 2023 World Cup qualifiers

Wales Women will face Scotland in the final chance to impress manager Gemma Grainger ahead of the start of the 2023 World Cup qualifying campaign, it has been announced.

Wales will welcome Scotland - ranked 23rd in the FIFA world rankings, nine places above the hosts - to Parc y Scarlets for a behind-closed-doors friendly on Tuesday, June 15. The kick-off time is yet to be confirmed.

The two teams last met in the 2017 Cyprus Cup, where Scotland won 6-5 on penalties after a goalless draw.

It will be the last chance for Wales boss Grainger to see her players in action on international duty before they begin their bid to qualify for the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, which would mark Wales' first trip to a major tournament.

Scotland, meanwhile, have travelled to two major tournaments: the 2017 Euros and 2019 World Cup, where they narrowly missed out on a last-16 spot.

Wales' qualifiers begin in September, and Grainger's side have been drawn alongside France, Slovenia, Greece, Kazakhstan and Estonia.

Grainger has already overseen two friendlies since her appointment as Jayne Ludlow's successor in March, where Wales lost 3-0 to Canada - ranked eighth in the world - and drew 1-1 against Denmark who are ranked 16th.

The Wales manager said: "I’m very excited to be with the players again. We had a great camp in April with two competitive performances. Scotland will be a great test as we look to continue the progress ahead of the World Cup qualifiers beginning in September."
