Wales Women 1-0 New Zealand: Kayleigh Green's last-gasp header secures victory and ends goalless spell

Wales Women have brought their goalless spell to an end with a last-gasp victory over a New Zealand team that's headed to the Women's World Cup this week.

Kayleigh Green's 90th minute header saw Wales cast their goal drought aside after going into the friendly without scoring for a successive seven matches.

The scores were kept level throughout the 90 minutes, aided by Wales goalkeeper Laura O'Sullivan fending off a New Zealand penalty in the first half to keep the scoresheet balanced.

And despite their superior world ranking, the World Cup-headed Ferns - ranked number 19 in the world standings compared to Wales' 33rd position - couldn't capitalise on their chances and came away empty-handed.

Jayne Ludlow's side welcomed the Football Ferns to Cardiff's Leckwith Stadium in front of 2,011 fans on Tuesday night in what was Wales' final friendly before beginning their Euro 2021 qualifying campaign in August, while it was New Zealand's last outing before travelling to the World Cup in France this week.

The match will have been viewed as a test for Wales against a side competing in this year's global showpiece tournament, while the result will be seen as a major boost for Ludlow's side, who were able to come away with a win against a team who caused an upset in beating Phil Neville's England 1-0 on Saturday - ranked third in the world.

England, of course, saw Wales narrowly miss out on World Cup qualification last August when they secured a 3-0 win over Wales in Newport.

Key Wales midfielders Jess Fishlock and Angharad James were rested for this fixture, giving Ludlow the chance to make her changes for the final friendly before their next campaign commences, culminating in an encouraging display that will inspire confidence as Wales look to prepare to qualify for their first major international tournament.

Wales' next international outing is on August 29 away to the Faroe Islands, when their Euro 2021 qualifying campaign officially begins.
