Wales Women 0-3 Canada: New era for Welsh football begins as Wales boss Gemma Grainger loses first match

Gemma Grainger's reign as Wales Women manager started in defeat after Canada ran out 3-0 winners in a friendly at Leckwith Stadium.

In a tough test against the 10th-best side in the world, goals from Deanne Rose, Evelyn Viens and Jessie Fleming proved the different in Grainger's first match in charge since taking over from Jayne Ludlow.

However, there were plenty of positives for the new boss to look back on, with Liverpool midfielder Ceri Holland handed a debut, while the new 4-3-3 system worked well despite the result.

Canada took the lead after 25 minutes, when Rose fired past Laura O'Sullivan after being played into acres of space from a long ball over the top of the Welsh defence.

Viens doubled the lead on 59 minutes before Fleming curled home a stunning third four minutes later.

In between Canada's second and third goals, Wales had a penalty appeal waved away after Natasha Harding found space in the box - which was, in truth, their best chance of the match.
