Wales wing Tom James tells how revealing his depression has allowed him to stop lying about injuries

Former Wales wing Tom James has spoken of his sense of freedom at having publicly acknowledged his struggle with mental health issues.

James announced in January last year that he was suffering with depression and took a break from the game to receive treatment.

The 32-year-old Cardiff Blues man returned to rugby last summer and is currently playing for Merthyr in the Welsh Premiership.

In a post-match interview with the BBC , James said: "After struggling for so many years I just could not cope anymore.

"The Blues have been so good to me. Talking about it (has been) unbelievable because I don't have to lie about injuries anymore. I can just tell everyone and be myself."

When James' problems were first revealed, he said: "I am incredibly grateful for the unwavering support from my team-mates, the coaches, medical team and staff at Cardiff Blues, and have been overwhelmed by the messages and kind words from the rugby public."

He added: "I also want to say a special thanks to my partner Brooke and the rest of my family and friends for being there for me. Thanks again."

James' former Wales team mate Scott Baldwin, who himself has endured mental health battles, paid tribute to his courage in confronting the problem.

"When I had my injury I had dark times and it was something I had never dealt with before," said Ospreys hooker Baldwin, who is joining Harlequins next season.

"Tom was always at the end of the phone.

"It shows that no matter what type of character you are we all have these moments, these times.

"Tom is a bubbly character who will do things like hide in bins and jump out at people. He's someone you would never have associated mental health problems with until he came out with it."
