Wales weather forecast: Met Office upgrades warning as nation faces fierce winds and heavy rain

The Met Office has upgraded its weather warning for high winds in Wales on Saturday.

On Tuesday the weather service issued two weather warnings saying there would be severe rain in Wales on Friday and high winds on Saturday.

Forecasters now say the 50mph forecast gusts on Saturday are likely to be more than 60mph in places.

The warning, which is in place for the whole of Wales all day Saturday, says: "Unseasonably strong southwesterly winds are expected to cause some disruption, with gusts over 40mph quite widely inland.

"Gusts over 50mph are possible across parts of central and south-eastern England, particularly in association with showers. Gusts in excess of 60mph are likely around coasts of Bristol Channel, English Channel and through the Strait of Dover."

The weather warning lead to organisers pulling the plug on the after the Met Office warned of the wild weather, including heavy rain and high winds.

It is also not good news for people who were planning to cross over the Severn Bridge to see the Bristol Balloon Festival.

Channel Four weather forecaster Liam Dutton said the most concern was the wind for Wales and England on Saturday.

There is also a weather warning in place for Wales on Friday.

The Met Office warns: "A band of heavy rain, with the possibility of some very heavy bursts, will move northwards during Thursday night and Friday.

"Within this band 10-15 mm is widely expected, however some places could see as much as 30mm in just a few hours. Once the rain has cleared scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop, particularly during Friday.

"Many places will miss these, but where they do occur 10-20mm is possible in one hour, with perhaps 30mm in a few hours."
