Wales v South Africa team news: Bradley Roberts set to make debut against country of his birth

Hooker Bradley Roberts is set to make his Wales debut against the country of his birth on Saturday.

WalesOnline understands Roberts has won a place on the bench against South Africa, just days after his shock call-up to the Welsh squad.

Roberts is thought to have been preferred to Kirby Myhill as cover for Ryan Elias, with Ken Owens not expected to be fit.

You can read about the possible starting XV in more detail here.

Saturday's match should also see Scarlets tighthead WillGriff John finally get his first cap nearly 20 months after he was denied a debut in the Covid-hit 2020 Wales v Scotland Six Nations match.

John had been named as a starter in that game before it was postponed just 24 hours before kick-off, and he has failed to win selection since.

Roberts' rise is perhaps the most surprising story of the autumn in some ways, with the Ulster hooker qualifying through his grandmother, who hails from Llandysul in Ceredigion.

If Roberts does win his first Wales cap, he will have to sign for a Welsh region next season when his contract expires in June if he wants to continue his international career under the 60-cap rule. You can read more about his background and career so far, here.

The 25-year-old was born and raised in Durban and has been the subject of interest from Ireland after quickly becoming a fans' favourite at Ulster.

Elsewhere, the Welsh bench is likely to have a more experienced look, with Lions players Liam Williams, Wyn Jones and Gareth Davies expected to feature, alongside Gareth Anscombe.

Seb Davies and Ben Carter are tipped to take the final two spaces on the bench when Wayne Pivac officially announces his 23 on Thursday. You can follow that live here.

WalesOnline reported earlier today that Rhys Carre is set to start ahead of Wyn Jones, with Ellis Jenkins also in line to make his international comeback after three years.
