Wales v Barbarians team news as Johnny McNicholl the one uncapped player in Wayne Pivac's first selection

Johnny McNicholl is the one uncapped player selected as new head coach Wayne Pivac names his first Wales side to face the Barbarians at the Principality Stadium on Saturday (2.45pm).

The Scarlets speedster qualified on the three-year residency rule earlier this month having arrived from his native New Zealand in 2016.

He lines up on the right wing in a side captained by Ospreys flanker Justin Tipuric, with Alun Wyn Jones sidelined by a groin injury.

With the English-based Dan Biggar and the crocked Rhys Patchell also unavailable for this uncapped fixture, Jarrod Evans lines up at No 10.

He will be joined in an all-Blues half-back partnership by Tomos Williams, while the versatile Aaron Wainwright packs down at No 8.

There’s a spot on the bench for one-cap back rower Ollie Griffiths, with the 36-cap prop Rob Evans returning to the fold as a replacement following his surprise omission from the World Cup squad.

Two other forwards who missed out on the trip to Japan - prop Leon Brown and lock Seb Davies - are included among the subs, along with revitalised Dragons fly-half Sam Davies who hasn’t played for Wales since the summer of 2017.

Pivac said: “This week has been hugely exciting and hugely important for us as a group. “It has been an opportunity for us as a new squad and management to get together and to set the scene for what the future holds.

“There has been quite a lot of learnings for the squad this week, looking at what we are trying to do and us providing some clarity, but we have also stressed the enjoyment factor of being together for the first time and the excitement of not only this weekend but the future.

“This weekend itself is really exciting.  The Barbarians are what rugby is all about.  It is the fun element of the game and supporters should be looking forward to some good old fashioned running rugby and it should be an entertaining afternoon.

“It is fantastic to have a double header at the Stadium with Wales Women and it should be a great showcase of rugby.”

The Barbarians are being coached by Pivac’s predecessor, Warren Gatland, who stepped down as Wales boss after the World Cup following 12 years at the helm.

They will be skippered by 124-cap Ireland hooker Rory Best, who plays his final international match, with a crowd of more than 60,000 expected at the stadium.
