Wales 'turn Kitakyushu red' as 15,000 local fans attend open training session and sing national anthem

Wales were offered a stunning glimpse of the support and passion among local fans for the Rugby World Cup in Japan after almost 15,000 people attended their open training session in Kitakyushu on Monday.

Huge queues snaked around the Kitakyushu Stadium ahead of the Wales squad's short journey from their hotel, with Welsh wing George North posting a video praising the 'incredible support'.

And 30 minutes before the players were due to arrive, the atmosphere inside the stadium continued to ramp up, with huge numbers wearing Wales shirts.

Fans also sung both the Welsh national anthem and hymn tune 'Calon Lan' after being provided with hymn sheets for a full-scale rehearsal.

Monday's scenes followed the players' arrival two days ago, when hundreds of local schoolchildren greeted them at Kitakyushu International Airport.

Former Wales captain Ryan Jones addressed the crowd before training started.

"We had a dream 18 months ago to turn this city red," he said.

"And with a week to go before the first game of the World Cup, we have done it."
