Wales to play France in deserted Paris as national curfew announced, state of emergency declared and 62 players to be selected

Wales' opening autumn rugby match against France looks like it will go ahead on October 24 despite the city being completely shut down at the moment the first whistle blows.

French president Emmanuel Macron tonight announced a curfew will be introduced, ordering people to stay inside their homes after 9pm - the exact time the Wales game is due to kick off in 10 days. A state of emergency in the country has been declared.

The announcement comes amid a huge surge in coronavirus numbers in the country, with a further 22,951 infections confirmed on Wednesday. The were 19,724 new UK cases.

The curfew will come into effect from Saturday and last for at least four weeks, Mr Macron said in a televised address to the nation.

It comes as a dispute between the French Rugby Federation and Top 14 clubs, that had threatened the game, looks to be heading towards a resolution.

French clubs were refusing to release their players for the game, arguing the six-game international scheduled was unacceptable. At one stage it even looked like France may have to field a team of U20s and second division players.

But L'Equipe now report a compromise will see France select two squads of 31 players for the six matches this autumn, with one group playing the first three matches and the other playing the second three. It remains to be seen what the make-up of those squads will be, with talks continuing late into Wednesday night.

Wales head to Paris at the end of next week ahead of the game on the Saturday.

The night-time curfew will apply to the capital Paris and its suburbs as well as Marseille, Lyon, Lille, Saint-Etienne, Rouen, Toulouse, Grenoble and Montpellier.

Anyone found breaking the curfew will be fined €135 (£121).
