Wales, Swansea City and Everton great Dai Davies has died aged 72

Welsh football legend Dai Davies has sadly passed away at the age of 72.

The former Everton, Swansea City and Wrexham goalkeeper was diagnoised with terminal pancreatic cancer last year, and was treated at the Royal Hospital in Liverpool before being moved to the Nightingale Hospice in Wrexham.

The news of his diagnosis sparked an outpouring of love and support from the wider footballing family, with fellow Everton and Wales legend Neville Southall among the many to pay tribute.

He said: “Dai had incredible mental strength and never let the odd mistake affect him. He just kept going.

“He won more than 50 caps and played loads of games at the top level and should be recognised as a top goalkeeper.

“His attitude was always spot on and he’s a great guy as well, a really funny person.”

Confirming the news of his sad passing, Everton Former Players Foundation tweeted: "Sad to report the passing of Everton goalkeeper Dai Davies, our thoughts go out to his family".

Born in the mining village of Glanamman, Davies started his career at Swansea City before joining league champions Everton for £20,000 in 1970.

He stayed at the Toffees for seven seasons before later joining Wrexham in 1977, returning to Swansea for a year before then going on to take the role of player-coach at Tranmere.

Davies was also capped 52 times for his country before retiring in 1987.

Former club Swansea were among the first to pay tribute to Davies, tweeting: "Rest in peace, Dai Davies.

"Everyone at Swansea City send their deepest condolences to the family and friends of former Swans goalkeeper, Dai Davies, who sadly passed away following his battle with cancer.

"Once a Jack, always a Jack."
