Wales still hopeful Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey can play in key summer Euro 2020 qualifiers

Wales are hopeful Aaron Ramsey can play a part in their crunch Euro 2020 summer qualifiers, even though he has pulled on an Arsenal shirt for the last time.

Ramsey will be given a guard of honour ahead of the Gunners' home finale with Brighton this weekend to commemorate his 11 years as an Arsenal player since leaving Cardiff City in 2008.

The midfield magician can't play in the game because of a hamstring injury and won't feature for Arsenal again, not even if they make the Europa League final on May 29.

Wales have huge qualifiers away to Croatia on Saturday June 8 and then Hungary in Budapest three days after and Ryan Giggs has not yet given up on Ramsey featuring.

Giggs is hoping the extra few days are enough for Ramsey to overcome his injury. He will not be undergoing surgery.

Aaron Ramsey's Arsenal farewell message to fans as injury ends Gunners career prematurely

Wales' medics have been in touch with Arsenal's doctors and have not yet been told Ramsey is ruled out of the Euro clashes.

His level of match fitness would obviously be open to question, but Giggs will do everything he can to get Ramsey on the field of play.

Ramsey missed Wales' 1-0 opening win against Slovakia at Cardiff City Stadium towards the end of March, having sustained the hamstring problem a week earlier whilst playing for Arsenal in Napoli.

He was hoping to return in time for Arsenal's Premier League run-in and a potential Europa League final.

Those plans have been dashed with Arsenal boss Unai Emery confirming Ramsey won't feature again, but Giggs will continue to monitor his recovery in a bid to throw him into the Welsh mix.

In Ramsey's absence, Daniel James came into the side against Slovakia and scored a memorable winner.

But a fully-fit Ramsey will automatically return to the starting XI, with one of James, Harry Wilson or David Brooks sitting out.

The enormous Wales dilemma Swansea City ace Daniel James has just given Ryan Giggs

An alternative would be for Ramsey to play deeper next to Joe Allen instead of young Matt Smith, but that is a route Giggs is loathe to embark upon because he wants the Juventus-bound star in as advanced a role as possible.

Ramsey formally leaves Arsenal on June 30 when contract expires, joining Italian champions Juventus as a free agent on a reputed £400,000 a week deal.
