Wales star Gareth Anscombe reveals injury return plans and Rugby World Cup heartache

Wales were dealt a big blow prior to the 2019 Rugby World Cup when Gareth Anscombe was ruled out due to injury.

The 28-year-old played a key role in Wales ' Grand Slam success earlier this year, with the fly-half named as the man of the match in the crucial win over Ireland.

But Anscombe sustained an ACL injury in early August during a World Cup warm-up defeat against England at Twickenham.

Whilst Wales have the depth to cope with the blow, the Ospreys star is naturally still reeling from the devastation of missing out on the World Cup.

Anscombe said as much when he opened up on ITV ahead of Wales' clash against Georgia on Monday morning but he insists that his focus remains on recovering as quickly as possible.

"You train yourself pretty hard for all of those highs, especially when you look back to the Grand Slam moments," Anscombe told ITV.

"For it to be taken away after a training camp is difficult to get over. Seeing the boys run out today is tough to take but I'm just going to focus on my rehab and getting back as quick as I can. It's part and parcel of the game."

Furthermore, Anscombe revealed that he is still planning to play this season for Ospreys, though he admits it's an optimistic target, with the New Zealand-born player potentially set for another eight months on the sidelines.

"I'm about four weeks post operation now. Everyone is happy and the surgeon is happy," Anscombe added.

"My medical team have been fantastic and given me a lot of support. It's going well and hopefully I will be back before the end of the rugby season.

"I don't know if my physio will be happy that I said that but obviously I want to get back as early as I can. When the surgeon and the physio are happy, hopefully I will be able to put my hand up before the end of the season. It's just small steps at the moment."
