Wales star Aaron Ramsey just donated thousands to save a homeless charity from closing days after making £10,000 NHS gesture

Aaron Ramsey has donated £3,000 to aid efforts to save the community hub of a Newport-based homeless charity.

Feed Newport, which also helps vulnerable people and the elderly within the community, have posted a GoFundMe page urging people to help save their local hub on the city's Commercial Road from closure.

A statement read: "At the moment we are busy helping the homeless, vulnerable, elderly etc throughout this covid-19 pandemic by making up and delivering essential food item parcels.

"Sadly even though we are busy helping people our community hub is at risk of closing."

Ramsey's representatives reached out to the charity to offer their help, and were told that £3,000 was required to help keep them ticking over for the next few months.

The former Arsenal star duly obliged, and took to his Instagram page to encourage others to get involved.

He wrote: "There is a really important charity to support in Newport, Wales.

"Feed Newport offer essential services not just for homeless and vulnerable but for anyone who is in need during the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

"In the meantime, I am going to make sure that they are fully funded to cover the cost of the hub and anyone who would like to donate, here is the link.

"Thank you."

Tariq Khan, founder and director, said: "It was a pleasant surprise.

"The virus is affecting a lot of homes and businesses across the city, and we were facing closure as the only part of our business that is working is the food bank, which we've turned into a quick response hub for those isolating or housebound.

"I answered one phone call that I thought was from overseas, and was someone trying to sell me an accident claim or something like that.

"The lady on the phone was asking about the work we do and said they'd been following us on Instagram and were in awe of the work we've been doing.

"She then said she was a representative of Mr Ramsey, and we must have got our wires crossed because I thought she was talking about Gordon Ramsey!

"Then yesterday my colleague said that Mr Ramsey had made a £3,000 donation.

"Again, he thought it was the chef, but after work I had a load of missed calls.

"I phoned back and it was the same lady again, she mentioned football and it clicked then.

"I got a bit emotional to be honest.

"That money will go towards our hub, our bills and rent and hopefully see us through."

It's the latest wonderful gesture to have been made by the Welsh international, who also recently donated £10,000 to another GoFundMe page raising money for NHS staff fighting the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.
