Wales's Hillgrove private school site has been put up for sale

An independent school in Wales where children were taught for over 80 years has been put up for sale.

Bangor’s Hillgrove School was founded in 1934 - and the current owners James and Sylvia Porter had run the site since 1975.

But it closed to pupils in 2017 with Mr and Mrs Porter blaming the "economic realities".

Now the site - which includes the school and a seven bedroom home - has been placed on the market with Sterling Estates for £1.9m.

Nigel Crabtree, from Sterling Estates, said the owners were sad to have to part company with the school but felt the time was right.

He added: "They would like to see the site continue as a school, it was a a very well known school in the area and had accommodated 180 pupils.

"There are alternative options for the site, these include (subject to planning) a residential development or a hotel. It's a large 2.5 acre site."

The house was built by Farrer Roberts in the 1800s on the Plas Lodwig Estate which he owned.

During the First World War, the house was one of two Cottage Hospitals in Bangor, called Penrhyn Cottage Hospital and was used for gassed and wounded troops back from the trenches in France.

Despite its history it is not currently listed.
