Wales will make a decision on Dan Biggar’s availability to face Scotland in Saturday’s Six Nations clash in Cardiff later in the week after revealing the fly-half is making “excellent progress” in his recovery from the ankle injury suffered against Ireland on Sunday.
Biggar eventually limped out of the 16-16 draw in Dublin after 21 minutes, having rolled his ankle when fielding Jonathan Sexton’s kick-off, and Warren Gatland, the Wales head coach, revealed after the match that the initial diagnosis was a high-ankle sprain which, depending on the seriousness, could have ruled him out of the tournament.
Rhys Priestland replaced Biggar and kicked 11 points at the Aviva Stadium – although was wayward with a couple of drop-goal attempts late on – but the Wales Rugby Union reported positive news over Biggar on Tuesday.
“Dan Biggar has made excellent progress with his recovery following the ankle injury sustained against Ireland on Sunday,” read the WRU statement. “Indications are that the injury is not considered long term and decisions over his availability for this weekend will be made later in the week. The squad meet back up tomorrow [Wednesday] to prepare for the clash against Scotland at Principality Stadium on Saturday.”
