Wales rugby star calls out Katie Hopkins lie after TV interview over Twitter ban

Wales rugby star Ashton Hewitt has called out Katie Hopkins after she accused him of a "threat of sexual nature of violence" against her.

And he also questioned the news outlet that allowed the controversial, right wing commentator to make that claim on live television without further scrutiny or questioning.

Posting on Twitter, Wales and Dragons winger Hewitt said: "According to her, my tweet about Katie Hopkins was a “threat of sexual nature of violence” against her.

"She said that on the news. And they lapped it up. Is it that easy for a lie to be accepted?"

Hewitt's tweet came after Hopkins appeared on Sky News Australia's Outsiders programme, where she was giving her first interview since being banned from the social media platform last week.

"(I was banned) Because I used the phrase 'hung like a baboon'," Hopkins told the Australian programme.

"I used it in response to a threat of sexual nature of violence against me. Many people will know conservative women like myself receive those threats.

"So I mocked back and said he'd better be hung like a baboon. It's a line from Blackadder and it's in the urban dictionary - it's about testicular fortitude.

"I have been banned from Twitter for life for using the phrase 'hung like a baboon'."

The presenters of the programme called the decision "unbelievable", with one claiming that "they'll now be after Blackadder now" in reference to Hopkins' mention of the comedy, adding that "you can't call it "Blackadder" anymore.

However, the actual wording of Hewitt's tweet and how it could be a "threat of sexual nature of violence" was not brought up during the interview.

Hopkins ban came about following a plethora of tweets directed at Manchester United footballer Marcus Rashford, following the England international's campaign to ensure that children received free school meals.

In response to her tweets, Dragons winger Hewitt posted: "Katie Hopkins is f***ing toxic."

Hopkins replied: "Am I? He better be hung like a baboon... #katiehopkins."

And it has now transpired that this was the post that Twitter banned Hopkins for as it violated their rules against hateful conduct.
