Wales rugby matches to come off free-to-air TV as Amazon Prime set to be announced as Autumn Nations Cup broadcaster

Amazon Prime are set to be announced as the main broadcaster for the inaugural Autumn Nations Cup, according to reports.

The eight-team tournament was officially announced on Thursday, with fixtures for the cup, which will take place over four weekends in November and December, being released.

And the Telegraph report that streaming service Amazon Prime are set to be unveiled as the main broadcaster for the tournament which features the Six Nations teams as well as Fiji and Georgia.

It had already been widely reported earlier this week that the internet streaming giant were in talks about the broadcast right for the Autumn Nations Cup.

However, the latest reports suggest things have advanced significantly.

Amazon Prime already have plenty of experience broadcasting live sport - showing Premier League football and exclusive coverage of the ATP and WTA tennis tours.

But this would be Amazon's first attempt at broadcasting rugby.

The move would likely be met with a mixed reaction - with many likely to bemoan the fact that more live rugby had been lost from free-to-air TV, especially as the Six Nations's TV deal with BBC and ITV ends in 2022.

However, given the financial impact of the coronavirus, the introduction of a new broadcaster with sporting experience and a hefty budget is a luxury the sport can scarcely afford to turn down.

Wales' fixtures for the tournament were announced on Thursday afternoon, with matches against Ireland, Georgia, England and a fourth opponent from the other group.

The Ireland match will take place in Dublin, but the other three - all classed as home games - have yet to have a venue confirmed.
