Wales rugby fans see red after O2 texts offer them free drinks in exchange for supporting England

Mobile service provider O2 managed to enrage Welsh rugby fans on international day by texting them a request to show support for rivals England.

The ill-judged message pinged into the handsets of subscribers up and down the country yesterday morning, just hours before the home team's clash against Eddie Jones' men.

It read: "Show England the power of your support when they face Wales in Cardiff today.

"Gather your mates, there's a drink waiting at selected Greene King pubs.

"Raise a glass, on us.

"Be their armour #WearTheRose."

The message was then tweeted by, amongst others, Professor Roger Awan-Scully, head of Political Studies at Cardiff University .

"Nice for O2 to text this to all their customers in Wales today..." he wrote, prompting hundreds of likes and retweets.

"Can you please stop texting myself and all other Welsh people to support England today #muppets ," added Mark Hawkins

Meanwhile, as Wales emerged victorious from the clash, Debbie Moyle added: "I think I'll raise a glass to Wales beating England and currently being #1 in the world rugby rankings instead."

To make matters worse, any crafty home fan attempting to cadge a free drink by donning a white shirt would have had difficulty seeing as there are only a handful of Green King pubs in Cardiff, with only one  - Glassworks in Wharton Street - located in the city centre.

However, O2 did eventually concede they'd slipped up a their reply to one disgruntled fan.

"Hey O2, might have been wise to not send this to customers with Welsh postcodes #NotWearingTheRose," tweeted Mike Crippen.

The phone company's response read, "Apologies for any upset Mike – whoever you’re supporting today, there’s a free drink on us.
"We've passed your feedback to our internal teams for this to be looked into, thanks for getting in touch about this."
