Wales officially become number one in world rugby rankings after bouncing back against England

Wales' victory over England in Cardiff means Warren Gatland's men have now secured their spot as the number one side in the world.

After their 14-match unbeaten run was brought to an end thanks to Eddie Jones' men at Twickenham last weekend, the Six Nations champions bounced back with intent in their second Rugby World Cup warm-up at the Principality Stadium on Saturday with a 13-6 win.

Despite New Zealand trouncing Australia 36-0 with five tries just a week after a sorrowful 47-26 defeat to the Wallabies, it wasn't enough to continue the All Blacks' stay at number one.

Wales went into Saturday's game knowing a win by any margin over England would see them become No. 1, while Eddie Jones' men could also have topped the rankings if they had beaten Wales by a 16-point margin.

The new rankings will be made official on Monday.

Wales had, of course, enjoyed a short-lived spell in the top spot last weekend by virtue of New Zealand's defeat to Australia, but disappointment at Twickenham saw them knocked out of that position before the rankings were officially updated on Monday morning.

Wales now head to Turkey for another pre- World Cup training camp, before back-to-back fixtures with Ireland on August 31 and September 7 concluding their warm-ups.

Elsewhere, England host Ireland next Saturday (August 24), with the hosts unable to go above Wales in the rankings next week if they secure a win over Joe Schmidt's men. However, any Ireland victory next weekend will see them go above Wales in the world table.
