Wales' new national lockdown measures will be announced by First Minister Mark Drakeford today

First Minister Mark Drakeford will today announce new Wales-wide measures to control the spread of coronavirus after the firebreak ends.

The 17 day lockdown in Wales ends on November 9 and businesses have been calling for clarity on what happens next.

Mr Drakeford will give an update at the Welsh Government briefing at 12.15pm today

It comes as England is set to go into a month long lockdown on Thursday, following Wales in moving away from a localised approach.

In Wales, Welsh Government has already said that non-essential retail and the hospitality sector can reopen after the firebreak.

They also say local measures will be dropped in favour of a national set of rules.

More details will be outlined later today.

He will say the actions everyone takes during and after the firebreak is more important than the rules and regulations the government puts in place.

He is due to state: “We need to do everything we can to reduce our exposure to the virus by reducing the contacts we have with other people – at home; in work and when we go out.

“We need to do the minimum – not the maximum, which the rules allow."

The firebreak was introduced on October 23 due to concerns over rising case numbers and fears the NHS in Wales was at risk of becoming "overwhelmed".
