Wales named one of National Geographic's 25 places to go in 2020

Wales has made it into the National Geographic magazine's list of the 'most exciting' destinations to visit in 2020.

The travel magazine has revealed its top 25 places to visit across the world next year based on four categories - culture, city, nature and adventure.

Among the dazzling destinations on the list, which includes the "classic American" city of Philadelphia and foodie heaven Parma in Itlay, is the "legend-filled land" of Wales.

The Wales Way , which is made up of three routes - the 185-mile Cambrian Way, the 180 mile Coastal Way and the North Wales Way stretching 75 miles- is described as "far-reaching routes that get the blood pumping".

It puts Wales alongside Mostar, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is celebrating 25 years of peace in 2020, and the Egyptian temples at Abu Simbel.

The Wales Way is the only winner in the list of the planet’s most exciting spots. The magazine say: "Three new, fully mapped national touring routes, collectively called the Wales Way, showcase the best of this legend-filled land."

National Geographic can't get enough of the Cambrian Way, which snakes north to south along the backbone of Wales, or the Coastal Way, which sweeps around Cardigan Bay, sandwiched between mountains and sea.

The magazine raves about the castle-rich North Wales Way, which follows a centuries-old trading route from northeastern Queensferry to the Isle of Anglesey.

Each driving itinerary offers a gateway to even more outdoor adventure, like following Edmund Hillary’s footsteps on Mount Snowdon or trying your hand at coasteering on the Pembrokeshire coast.

Also making the shortlist are the Canary Islands, Spain's autonomous Asturias region and the Maldives.

Other "must-see" destinations include Tohuku in Japan and the twisting Grossglockner Alpine Road in Austria.
