Wales name team to face South Africa as Jonathan Davies declared fit but Liam Williams suffers tournament-ending injury

Wales have received mixed injury news as they announced their side to face South Africa this weekend, with Jonathan Davies fit enough to be named in the starting line-up as Liam Williams suffers a tournament-ending injury.

News broke on Thursday that Saracens full-back Williams had suffered an ankle injury in training on Wednesday, sidelining him for the Yokohama clash and the rest of the tournament.

That has now been confirmed, with Leigh Halfpenny and his 84 Welsh caps being called into the starting side to replace him for the Rugby World Cup semi-final.

But there is better news on Davies, who has been a fitness concern for the last two weeks after suffering a knee injury in the win over Fiji in Oita.

He was named in the starting side to face France in the quarter-final last weekend but alerted medics that he was not fit to play the day before the match.

The two-time Lion has been once again been named in the starting side this week. Wales will have up until around an hour before kick-off, when the team sheets have to be submitted, to make any changes.

Along with skipper Alun Wyn Jones, Davies is the one player Wales can ill-afford to lose, particularly given how much joy France got through the middle in the quarter-final.

His presence in the side at the moment is a sight for the sore eyes of Welsh fans, who have had to digest disappointing news in the past 24 hours.

Elsewhere in the side, it’s as expected.

George North and Josh Adams start on the wings, with Hadleigh Parkes joining Davies in the midfield. Experienced half-backs Gareth Davies and Dan Biggar get the nod.

In the pack, it’s the same front five that started crunch games against Australia and France, with Wyn Jones, Ken Owens, Tomas Francis, Jake Ball and skipper Jones getting the nod.

Earlier this week, Josh Navidi was also ruled out of the rest of the tournament with a hamstring injury. Therefore, a back row of Aaron Wainwright, Justin Tipuric and Ross Moriarty will start.

South Africa have injury problems of their own to contend with following the loss of winger Cheslin Kolbe.

The diminutive livewire has set the tournament alight with his scintillating hot-stepping. But Wales will not have to be concerned about him as he misses the semi-final with an ankle injury.

Sbu Nkosi comes in to replace him.
