Wales may not have beaten New Zealand in 66 years, but this current side has proven it can change history

It was a special Q&A edition of the Welsh Rugby Podcast this week - with the boys answering as many questions as possible.

And one question in particular tested the wits of rugby writers Simon Thomas and Matthew Southcombe.

Wales may have toppled New Zealand in the world rankings after their 13-6 victory over England , but would they beat the All Blacks if they played each other next week?

This is how Simon and Matthew answered.

Here's what Simon Thomas said...

Just a short story before I start. I went on New Zealand radio the other day and the main question was 'Can Wales win the World Cup?' - which in their heads was 'Can Wales beat New Zealand?'

I was half expecting to hear quibbling about Wales being number one in the world but that wasn't the case. They were keen to know about the fly-half situation.

I came away from that thinking we are rated by the best rugby nation in the world. I did point out to them that although we hadn't beat them since 1953, we are actually ahead of them for the first time. I don't know how well that went down.

But in that, they did ask me how I would expect Wales to do against New Zealand. I said, to be brutally honest, if we played New Zealand next week, most Welsh people would still expect Wales to lose.

But they'd expect them to be competitive. Really competitive.

New Zealand are not the absolute invincible force they once were, but they are still capable of playing brilliant rugby.

I think if Wales played New Zealand, I'd expect New Zealand to win - as they have done over a long period of time.

But we'd give it an absolute go. One of the keys against New Zealand is defence and that's our strength.

You know what, I'd love to find out in a World Cup final.

Here's what Matthew Southcombe said...

What I would say is that Wales for so long struggled against the Southern Hemisphere nations.

Historically Wales are still very much second-best in those games. We had the decade-worth of defeats to Australia, while South Africa had our number until recently.

They've won the last four games against South Africa. But what this current Wales side are proving is that they are changing history.

They've done that against South Africa and Australia. We weren't supposed to beat those until we did.

The one final unanswered question is New Zealand. But this current group of players are going about their business and changing their perception.

They can beat these sides now and the All Blacks is the final test for them.
