Wales manager Robert Page comments on Tyler Roberts' Euros chances after protocol breach

Robert Page has insisted that Tyler Roberts’ chances of being named in the Wales squad for this summer’s European Championships will not be affected by his recent breach of team protocols.

Leeds United midfielder Roberts was released from the Wales camp on Monday in the build up to their World Cup qualifier against the Czech Republic on Tuesday evening.

The 22-year-old was one of three players, alongside Hal Robson-Kanu and Rabbi Matondo, who were excluded from the squad for what the Welsh FA termed “breaching FAW protocol.”

Roberts apologised on social media and revealed that the incident involved being “up in the hotel later than the set time”, but Page refused to elaborate following his side’s 1-0 win last night.

“No, that’s an in-house issue that we’ve had. We’ve dealt with it,” the caretaker manager said when asked if he could clear up what happened.

“There are so many positives about tonight’s performance. I don’t want to talk about that. It’s been dealt with. It’s forgotten. We move forward.”

Page was then asked if Roberts, Robson-Kanu and Matondo’s places in the squad for the Euros could be threatened by their behaviour.

“No. We’ve drawn a line under it,” he replied. “Everyone’s on a level playing field. We’ve drawn a line under it, we’ve moved forward and, like I said, I would rather talk about the performance of the players tonight and how well they’ve done.”

Page also refused to say whether the disciplinary action was taken after a breach of the side’s Covid-19 protocols.

LeedsLive understands that the trio had breached a curfew at the team hotel, with no suggestions that any Covid-19 protocols have been breached.

"Gutted to be leaving the camp early," Roberts posted on his Instagram Story on Monday.

"But rules are rules I shouldn't have been up in the hotel later than the set time. Sorry to the team, staff and Wales fans. I will continue to work as hard as I can to earn my place in the squad for the Euros."

Roberts is aiming to earn a place in the Wales squad for this summer's rescheduled Euros, where they were drawn alongside Switzerland, Turkey and Italy in Group A.

He had started against Mexico in Saturday's 1-0 victory and came off the bench in the 3-1 defeat by Belgium last week.

Wales earned a valuable 1-0 win over the Czech Republic thanks to a header from Manchester United winger Daniel James after both sides had been reduced to 10 men following red cards for Patrik Schick and Connor Roberts.
