Wales legend hits out at UEFA over format for Euro 2020 and their lack of fans

Wales most capped player Chris Gunter has branded UEFA's format for Euro 2020 a "joke" after their stormy exit.

Rob Page's side crashed out of the competition in the last-16 with a 4-0 defeat to Denmark in Amsterdam where Harry Wilson was sent off.

Wales had trekked over 5,300 miles after playing group games in Azerbaijan against Switzerland and Turkey before a showdown with Italy in Rome.

It left Charlton defender Gunter,31, who has 102 caps, drained and deflated after the FA of Wales said the UK Foreign Office had issued advice warning Wales fans "not to travel".

Gunter reflected: “Written off before a bag of air was kicked, 3,000 miles from home.

"Every nation had fans wherever they went, apart from the 350 who broke government rules and bank accounts to be there, you and us deserved more from this joke set up of a tournament, but who said life was fair."

Having had little support in Baku and Rome due to coronavirus restrictions, Wales were then told by the Dutch government that their fans were banned from entering Holland for their last 16 clash.

But Denmark supporters were allowed into the country and made up most of the 14,645 partisan crowd at the Johan Cruyff Arena to see their side thump Wales.

"Suck it up, keep your chin up, we'll be alright, trust me on that," added Euro 2016 veteran Gunter, who started against Italy in Wales' final group game.

"We did not deserve that scoreline but who said life was fair.

"Have a cry, but then smile that we were dining at the top table yet again.

"And smile even more that we'll be back, and we'll be the ones with the full stadium belting out our anthem that we all deserve."
