Wales issue statement to condemn abuse of England's players after Six Nations match

The Welsh Rugby Union has issued a strong statement, condemning the abuse of England players and BBC reporter Sonja McLaughlan over the weekend.

In the wake of Wales' 40-24 victory over England at the Principality Stadium on Saturday, Mclaughlan was left in tears over comments that were sent to her on Twitter regarding her interview with Owen Farrell, while Genge was sent death threats.

After a rip-roaring Six Nations clash, it turned into a dark weekend for a sport that often prides itself on core values that include respect and integrity.

"We are hugely disappointed and saddened by the social media abuse directed at opposition players and members of the media following the game at the weekend," a statement from the WRU read.

"As a rugby community these individuals have let us all down.

"This has to stop. It is not acceptable."

Following the final whistle on Saturday, experienced broadcaster McLaughlan was pitchside to speak to the England captain and she quizzed him over a number of controversial calls that went against his side.

Farrell appeared reluctant to engage in the line of questioning and McLaughlan continued to probe but the interview ended amicably.

However, she then received abuse from some users on Twitter for the way the interview played out.

"Toxic, embarrassing, disgraceful, appalling", she wrote on Twitter.

"Just some of the feedback I’ve had. Thanks for using @ sign so it’s all hit home. Now imagine getting inundated with abuse for doing your job. In my car crying. Hope you’re happy."

The RFU responded directly to the tweet, offering their support and condemning the actions of those sending the abuse.

After the abuse of McLaughlan became apparent on Saturday night, it then came to light that England prop Genge had received death threats.

A video emerged on social media of Genge failing to applaud Wales off the field after the match, which led to deplorable threats being made against the Leicester Tiger.

He tweeted: "Don’t know why I’m not clapping in that tunnel must be deep in thought, utmost respect for the Welsh. As for keyboard warriors sending death threats etc....", accompanied by a video of MMA champion Khabib Nurmagomedov saying ‘send me location’.
