Wales issue Rhys Patchell and Cory Hill injury update amid Rugby World Cup scare

Warren Gatland has issued an update on Rhys Patchell after the fly-half suffered a head injury in their final Rugby World Cup warm-up.

The Scarlets playmaker was forced off after just 21 minutes of Wales' defeat to Ireland in Dublin, after suffering a knock to the head tackling CJ Stander in the build-up to Rob Kearney's try.

Patchell didn't return from his head injury assessment, with Dan Biggar replacing him permanently.

With Patchell's previous history of concussions, this latest injury sparked fears that his World Cup dreams could have been over before they began.

But speaking afterwards, Wales coach Gatland played down fears about Patchell - saying he expects him to still be on the plane.

"It was just a HIA," he said. "He’ll be assessed over the next few days.

"He seemed ok in the changing room. He’ll be fine for the World Cup.

"With that knock, he's probably gone a bit low to make the tackle.

"We’ll talk to the medics about that and see how he feels over the next few days."

Ireland v Wales Post Match Review

Gatland added that there was no time frame on any decision to be made if and when Wales would call up Jarrod Evans as an injury replacement.

This head injury is the latest suffered by Patchell, having already missed out on large chunks of the last season due to two concussions in the last 12 months.

He also had a long lay-off in 2015 after being 'sparked out' during a regional match.

Gatland also offered an update on Cory Hill - with the lock having been named in the World Cup squad despite not playing since February.

His return had been delayed by a small stress fracture in his leg, with the second-row not expected to feature until at least Wales' second pool match against Australia.

"He's stayed back in Wales and is doing all his oxygen chamber stuff this week in Swansea," said Gatland.

"He's pretty pleased with the progress he's made."
