Wales injury update as squad for England set to change following late blow

Wales are set to make a late change to the squad named to face England on Sunday following an injury to scrum-half Tomos Williams.

The Cardiff Blues No.9 picked up a knock to the shoulder in training on Friday and Aled Davies is now poised to replace him on the bench at Twickenham.

Warren Gatland has gone for a strong Wales 23 for the first of four Rugby World Cup warm-ups, naming 13 players who started the Grand Slam victory back in March, whereas England boss Eddie Jones has opted for a more experimental side for the Twickenham clash.

However, there is set to be a late change to the Wales side.

"There’s a good chance that Tomos Williams may not be on the bench on Sunday," revealed Wales boss Gatland.

"He got a shoulder knock in training today. I don’t know the extent of that but it would probably rule him out of Sunday.

"That would mean Aled Davies would come on the bench."

The Wales boss also admitted they had originally picked Cory Hill in the second row but decided he wasn't worth the risk as "his ankle is a little bit tight".

Elsewhere, Aaron Shingler has been in full training for a few weeks while Josh Navidi returned to full training on Friday after a hamstring issue.

Gatland added: "We’ve been looking after James Davies, who’s had issues with the back.

"We’ve got a few niggles but most players are pretty much up and running.

"Samson Lee has a hamstring issue. Rob Evans has a shoulder and a neck irritation.

"We’re trying to be smart about players we expose but also trying to manage some others.

"If we feel we need to protect some players then we’ll do that.

"Fingers crossed that we don’t pick up too many injuries going forward, we’re bound to get one or two more but hopefully not too many."
