Wales' Gerwyn Price beats Gary Anderson in PDC darts final to make history with sensational display

Wales' Gerwyn Price produced a sensational display to beat Gary Anderson 7-3 and win the 2021 PDC World Darts Championship title.

The 35-year-old became the first Welshman to win the title after overcoming Anderson with a remarkable display of darts.

In the process, he moved to number one in the world, usurping Michael van Gerwen who had held the spot at the top of the rankings for seven years.

Price made a dramatic start, coming back from two legs down to win the first set against the throw.

But two-time world champion Anderson pulled out three straight legs to take the second set.

From there, Price seriously stepped up his game, winning the next four sets as he barely missed a double.

The sixth set was a particular highlight, with Price averaging over 136 for the set - a tournament record for a single set - as he finished with a 10-dart leg to cap a spell of simply wondrous, superlative darts.

The level dropped a little in the next set, gifting Anderson a set which Price perhaps should have taken.

However, Price showed his nerve, winning the next set 3-2 to move within one of a maiden world title.

But in a set which should have been Price's, Anderson took the ninth set as the Welshman missed nine darts for the match.

In the 10th set, he eventually held his nerve to hold on in the final set to complete his ascension to the top of the sport.

As well as reaching world number one, he also joined an exclusive club of players in the process thanks to his prize money earnings.

Price's earnings over the past two years also means he is only the fourth player to surpass £1million in the PDC Order of Merit - joining Phil Taylor (2010), Michael van Gerwen (2015) and Peter Wright (2020) in the exclusive club.

Whereas Price has already long surpassed £1m in terms of career earnings, the PDC Order of Merit is taking on prize money earned over a two-year cycle - which is what makes the achievement so rare.
