George North is a doubt to feature for Wales in their next Six Nations match against Scotland next Sunday after he suffered suspected concussion in the 21-16 defeat to England in Cardiff.
Coach Warren Gatland confirmed afterwards that the winger will be assessed over the next few days before they make a decision, with North having missed the victory over South Africa in November’s autumn internationals after he was taken off the field with a cut above his eye in the 34-16 loss to New Zealand.
He was allowed to stay on the pitch until the end despite several heavy collisions, including one incident when he was struck in the face by James Haskell’s knee. However Gatland dismissed concerns that his medical team had not followed the correct protocols which dictate any player suspected of suffering concussion must be removed immediately.
“They wouldn’t have let him back on the field unless they felt 100% confident that he was okay, so you’ve got to back your medical team and I haven’t spoken to them about it. George seems fine,” he said.
“He passed all the protocols first time. We’ll have to see how he is over the next few days.”
