Wales' five-mile rule changed to allow you to travel farther to see family for 'compassionate reasons'

From Monday you will be able break the five-mile rule to visit family members for compassionate reasons.

The change was announced by Mark Drakeford ahead of his coronavirus briefing at 12.30pm on the changes to the Welsh lockdown rules.

Speaking on BBC Radio Wales the First Minister announced what he called a "significant package of measures".

In two weeks time, if the R value stays low, the five-mile rule will be completely overhauled. However from Monday you are allowed to visit any family member for a "compassionate reason".

Scotland already allows people to break its five-mile rule to go and see family members.

What counts as a compassionate reason?

According to the First Minister, it is at one's discretion what counts as compassionate. He said that it is not just for visiting people who are seriously ill.

Mr Drakeford said it would include a family member "whose wellbeing has been badly affected because they haven't been able to see people."

So if a family member is isolating alone, and it is really affecting their wellbeing, you can go and visit, he said.

The First Minister added that the rules were designed to allow people to use their judgement.

If all goes to plan the five-mile rule will be removed in full in two weeks. Mr Drakeford praised the people of Wales who had "created further headroom" and called on them to "to do one last lap of the stay local arrangements".
