Wales' first physically disabled Mr Gay blasts The Witches reboot for portrayal of villains

Wales' first physically disabled Mr Gay winner, Paul Davies, has criticised Warner Brothers' decision to feature evil characters with limb difference.

Paul, 36 from Treherbert in Rhondda, told WalesOnline that the depiction could be "dangerous" for viewers coming to terms with their differences.

“It will have a huge impact for a lot of people on every level, especially those with a limb difference”, he said.

“Seeing themselves portrayed as a villain, or something mean and nasty, when you have no representation anyway is quite dangerous.

“We have no representation, if any, on screen and when you finally get that opportunity to see someone similar to yourself you see them in a very villainous life, it’s not great”.

In the new depiction of the film, actor Anne Hathaway is seen to have three elongated fingers for her role as Grand High Witch.

The trailer for the film also suggests witches that live among us and can be identified by their lack of toes and claws.

Paul, who admitted that he has developed a thick skin over the years, believes that the depiction could be detrimental for children coming to terms with their differences.

“I survived and became my own little hero. I was born into prejudice from birth, the nurse said ‘er it’s got one hand’”, he added.

“I’ve developed thick skin and embraced my disability and my limb difference, but for some other children out there they’re still going through a journey”.

Leading charity in upper limb difference , REACH, released a statement showing their dismay for the film.

It read: "Members of the upper limb difference community are appalled and devastated taking to social media to voice their disappointment, upset and horror about the film release

"We see limb differences on mainstream television shows such as Strictly Come Dancing, The Great British Bake Off and huge fashion brands such as Tommy Hilfiger have created an adaptive range specifically for people who are differently abled, so it seems that this movie is shockingly out of touch with what’s going on in the world".

Currently, a social media hashtag #NotAWitch is making it's rounds on social media to protest the film's controversial use of limb difference.
